Giving negative feedback (especially when someone invested the time and EMOTIONS is hard!). But it’s essential!
I dislike giving negative feedback (who doesn’t!). It’s bloody hard, especially when a candidate has invested so much time in the process (how do you even measure that emotional investment? You definitely can’t quantify that).
But negative feedback, no matter how uncomfortable, is necessary! It’s what helps people grow, move forward, and understand why things didn’t work out.
Many companies water down feedback – I ALWAYS challenge this! What do you mean by ‘they are not the right fit’, for example? Can we please UNPACK IT! People deserve to know.
So, if you’re in a position to deliver feedback:
➤ Be honest – people appreciate transparency!
➤ Be specific – generalisms help noone
➤ Be respectful – a tough message doesn’t need to be brutal 🙏
A little effort in how you give feedback makes a world of difference.
